Chapter 1: "The Crash" opens the series: Daniel Greene learns of a crash landing on his sweethearts Brewster family property. The dying alien pilot informs Daniel that he is one of their "bridge builders" and carries alien genetic markers in his DNA. In his last breath, he also warns that other aliens like him will be arriving to investigate his crash, just before the alien pilot dies in Daniel's arms.
